In Europe, the EN ISO 20345:2011 standard is the basic specification for safety shoes and classifies safety shoes according to the level of protection required. Each of these categories provides different security features:

- SB (Safety Foundation) : These shoes are equipped with toe guards made of steel, composite material or aluminum to provide protection against falling objects and can withstand impacts of at least 200 joules. The impact absorption of the heel is also at least 200 joules.

- S1 Class : These shoes are anti-static and provide energy absorption in the heel area.

- Class S2 : In addition to the characteristics of Class S1, these shoes have higher water resistance.

- Class S3 : Features of Class S2 with reinforced midsole and non-slip soles.

- Class S1P : Similar to Class S1, these shoes have steel or non-steel midsoles that prevent nails or other sharp objects from penetrating.

- Category S4 : These shoes have similar characteristics to the S3 category, but are all made of plastic, making them waterproof.

- Class S5 : Similar to Class S4, these shoes are equipped with a hard midsole and non-slip soles.
